Description

Day 5: Water

Species name: Teras (TEH-ras)
Size: 30cm long
Niche: Esturine benthic feeder
Distribution: Found in some numbers at the mouths of most temperate rivers.
Noteworthy features: It has poor vision despite it's three eyes, being only able to make out light and shadow, but it's enough for it to sense movement. They live in small shoals and are easily startled, diving for cover in the mud whenever something unexpected passes above them. They have electrosensory apparatus on the underside of their wide head shield, which they use to detect crusteceans, burrowing worms and small fish hiding in the mud. They use their fins remarkably like legs to pull themselves through the silt.

Well. It was only a matter of time before I made a placoderm, and an electrosensory fish too. So this is really unsurprising. I used water as an excuse to draw a fish really. There wasn't much more thinking involved than that. I did have some nice ray-like underneath designs but I couldn't include them and the back of the head (funnily enough) so I opted for this view.

I learnt a few things about the pen too during this, also that I don't want to use it for any more of these XD

Also I feel I should let you know that I did sketch this on the day I was meant to, I just didn't lineart and colour it then. I didn't want to leave it until I had access to a computer because I strongly believe that the spirit of the challenge is 'draw every day', which is a good thing to get into the habit of doing.

Once again, awesome design - this one reminds me of some of the first fishes, who had bony head plates and armor. This is a great picture; I can really get a mental image of how this things would looks when it's moving. Also, I want to touch it! I always loved petting the stingrays at the aquarium... ^_^
