The devourer

Description

The Egyptian demon Ammut (or Amit, as she is sometimes know) was a formidable creature, part crocodile, part lion, part hippo and ocasionally part leopard she embodied all that was deadly allong the nile. Whenever anyone died their heart would be weighed by Anubis against the feather of Maat, the feather of truth, and if the bad deeds commited in life weighed more than the feather then the heart (in effect the soul) would be given to the devourer to consume. Thoth would judge the proceedings and would give the verdict, being the god of justice and scribes. In this way only those worthy were allowed into the afterlife, Ammut would consume all those who had commited more evil actions than good ones.
And thus she waits, expectantly, for the judging to be concluded and for her prize to be handed out.

And thus concludes your mythology lesson for today. :)
This was an anatomy study that I got a bit carried away with. I was out of reach of my computer and I just had a sketchbook with thin pages and some stock photos that I'd printed out ages ago. So rather than just drawing the animals as they were, I thought I'd try drawing a character with them. But I didn't have enough different animals to do that well, so I decided instead to draw a mythical beast.
The lion and crocodile photos I had went together so beautifully that I there was really only one option, I had to draw Ammut! I'm a massive fan of egyptian mythology and that hasn't really made it'self aparent in my artwork until now. Anyway, when I got back I thought I'd add a bit of colour underneath the shetch, but then BAM! This happened. The original sketch is here, if you're interested:[link] All stock information is on there.
The background was all done by me, no texture was used. It's meant to be papyrus, if you can't tell. I'm going to stop typing now, I've rambled enough.

I love the way her mane looks here; and good job blending the crocodile and lion features. (plus, hooray for mythology!)

Nice work. ^_^
